Coronavirus Updates: CDC Warns Lockdowns May Resume If Cases Go Up as Trump Shrugs Off Second Wave - YouTube

Submitted 25 day(s) ago by system

Stay informed with QuickTake's coronavirus coverage of up-to-the-minute stories on the COVID-19 crisis. #Coronavirus #Covid19 #CoronavirusUpdates — As Covid-19 cases soar to new highs, U.S. governors are again in the crucible, facing wrenching choices about how to balance economic recovery and the health of citizens. Their divergent approaches are inflaming tensions within states as well as with neighbors. While some have paused to reassess the wisdom of allowing movement and commerce, many are plunging ahead despite daunting numbers like Florida’s 2.8% increase in reported cases Friday, its largest daily jump since May 1. The surge also has produced record numbers of new cases in Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama and North Carolina. “The disease is spreading,” Governor Roy Cooper said Friday afternoon. The outbreaks -- and the dilemmas for governors -- come about a month and a half after U.S. states began emerging from emergency lockdowns, and as the country surpasses 2 million confirmed infections and 114,000 deaths. The pressure reflects the Trump administration’s approach to the pandemic, providing largely voluntary guidance and leaving states to set strategies. That has produced a patchwork of policies and cleared the way to reopening of high-risk places like casinos and bars. At the first U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention briefing in months, officials Friday said little about why cases are increasing in some places, instead repeating familiar advice about wearing masks and washing hands. Jay Butler, CDC’s Covid-19 response incident manager, said any lockdown decisions would be local. Coronavirus Updates: One Blood Type May Protect Against Virus; Covid-19 Is Fauci’s ‘Worst Nightmare’ - YouTube

Submitted 28 day(s) ago by system

A top World Health Organization expert has tried to clear up "misunderstandings" about comments she made that were widely understood to suggest that people without COVID-19 symptoms rarely transmit the coronavirus. Maria Van Kerkhove, the U.N. health agency's technical lead on the virus pandemic, insisted Tuesday that she was referring only to a few studies, not a complete picture, in the comments she made Monday. Van Kerkhove's remarks on Monday raised confusion and questions among outside experts who have recommended that people wear masks to try to prevent the virus from spreading. Research from genetic-testing giant 23andMe Inc. found that people with blood type O may be less likely to be infected with Covid-19. Scientists have been looking at genetic factors to try to determine why some people who contract the new coronavirus experience no symptoms, while others become gravely ill, and the company found differences in a gene that influences a person’s blood type can affect a person’s susceptibility to the virus. The United Kingdom has recorded Europe's highest number of deaths inked to coronavirus. It has overtaken Italy, and is second only to the United States in total number of recorded deaths from the disease. Dominic Raab, the First Secretary of State, said the latest figures portrayed “a massive tragedy” but he warned against making comparisons with other countries until much more information is available on all causes of death. The latest figures show there were 693 deaths linked to the virus in a 24-hour period in the UK. That brings the total number of deaths officially linked to the virus to 29,427. The impact of the pandemic on some of the most vulnerable people is increasingly clear. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show coronavirus related deaths in care homes in England and Wales increased by more than a third in the week ending 24th April. That week there were 2,794 registered deaths in care homes linked to coronavirus, bringing the total to nearly 6,000 care home deaths up to April 24th.
